At certain times, the openni launch doesn't recognize the device. That is, under normal circumstances there is: "Device "1d27/0601@2/4" with serial number "1206070219" connected". This doesn't show up at certain times. DMESG output when this happens is:

So many such lines.

After unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable, and restarting the openni launch, everything works fine.

Updating my Xtion Pro (601) on Win10 with the FW579-RD1081-112v2.zip did not work.

But Asus is offering a new self-extracting firmware flasher WUpdate_RD108x-5.8.22.exe (v 5.8.22 2013-11-05) on their support site (select Windows 8.1 64-bit) that I used to successfully flash my device.
