The doUpdates task is likely failing to install due to file locks. Attach listeners to task failure to observe it.
You can also try commenting out Archive::install to see if anything gets downloaded (install removes the file from the zip if the install was successful).

Thanks for the quick answer. So I tried to add a listener to see if the task failed but it didn't. Nonetheless it clicked and I found where the problem was. Your demo program was designed to do the updates in the background while there were still a main thread running while I tried to do it on launch. And thus setting the runner thread of task to daemon simply caused the VM to stop without further notice.
