quickfilters's Issues

"Next Steps" does not over-ride "Settings/Actions."

I mostly use my filters for tagging thousands of emails. Regarding the Settings -Actions for automatically "open editor " and "display filters list." These items appear in "settings" and similarly in "next steps" during filter creation. I have tested these in both directions, enabled or not in "settings." Either way, the "next steps" during filter creation will not over-ride the settings.
I don't know your intended behavior so I am posting this here.

Quick filters or quick folders?

Isn't this a little confusing to run with two different extensions in the same hub?

Why not keep them separate until you join them as at the moment we are following Quickfilters here until we get the official stable release to use for Thunderbird or am I missing something here?

Noted, I did load it and will play, but as I have 3 machines that are tied back to Thunderbird and quick filters, it's bad enough trying to keep them synced..

so this brings up another question that has been on my mind.
Can I export all Quickfilters database to say cloud storage and then load it back into another machine?

I actually work off 3 machines in any one day with emails open so this would be a perfect way to keep them all working with the same filters.. At the moment I use one machine to open emails in the morning to sort and the others just have to make do until the next day.

But back to the original question.. Two different Extensions.. with the view to merging into one?

Using the %subject% placeholder in custom templates doesn't work in Assistant

Using the %subject% placeholder to automatically fill the subject search condition when building custom filter templates doesn't work when the filter assistant is used. It does work when using the context menu "quickFilters: create filter from message".

This bug is also present in Thunderbird 68. need to do regression testing to see from which Thunderbird version this started.

mouse does not work on folder selection

I am creating a new filter. I want to select which target folder to move the message to. I cannot select folders by mouse, but only by keyboard.

I use this addon on Linux Fedora 33, Wayland.

Quick Filters icons not appearing when TB opens in 2 or more windows

Recently I'm often not getting the Quick Filters icons in the bar above. I did get it to show up in one window (I generally have 2 TB windows open) by disabling and re-enabling it, but it's not appearing in the other -- see attached.
QFltrs
Also if I close the window without the icons and then reopen it from the remaining, the icons are now showing in both. I generally start TB with 2 windows open.

You (Axel) answered my email with:

I am afraid QF isn't well tested for this use case - while in theory it should work as every Window has its own global variables, some of my7 routines use "marshalling" to the main window, by determining the window using "getLastUsedWindow" for that type (3pane) - which may lead to one window being "orphaned". The reason for this is mainly because you can have child windows (such as the QF Options dialog) that need to communicate with the main one.

So it's a bit of a design flaw - I use mail tabs in the one 3pane window instead - QF works well with this and Thunderbird remembers all opened tabs in a session (so you could have one tab for work and one for friends) - on top of that QF stores the currently selected QF tab category for each tab.

For example - I have a set of QF tabs for my day to day work, they are in the category "daily":

then I may open a separate Thunderbird tab and switch over to the category "Friends":

QF will keep the selected tabs consistent with the currently open Thunderbird tab.

Having said that, please feel free to file a bug report for this problem:

https://github.com/RealRaven2000/quickfolders/issues

Please click the New Issue button once you're there. This is the best way of tracking (and eventually fixing) this problem. I am currently very busy rewrting Thunderbird as a "mail experiment" so that we can deploy it on Thunderbird 78 - in fact I am paying another developer toi help with this task. I will try and incorporate a solution for this problem while we're at it.

kind regards,
Axel

Thanks for all your efforts and good work!

merged filters: some conditions not working

when merging multiple filters, sometimes conditions will not work. This is caused by mixing filters with different radio buttons "all conditions" vs "any conditions". Apparently the merged filter conditions internal "booleanAnd" attributes are not changed towards that of the target filter. So if the target (first) filter has "any" and the merged filter has "all" it may lead to some (or all) of it's conditions being to ignored.

Workaround: to fix such a filter change the condition from any to all, and save it, then change it back and save again. Unfortunately even though you can have mixed and / or operators for all conditions, the THundebird UI currently does not support managing down to this level. And it's very difficult to build a meaningful interface for building nested conditions, that is also easy to use.

filter of filters for quickFilters?

Hi,

would it be possible to add a filter of filters on the filter pane? With this I mean a search box for looking up key words not in the title of the filter but within the filters itself. There was an addon called "Filter of filters" in earlier versions that allowed such searches but it got discontinued and I think it would perfectly fit quickFilters.

Say you want to know which of your filters delete mails, then you enter "delete" in that search box and get a list of all filters that delete mails. If you want to know which filters flag mails with a specific term, you add that term to the search box and get a list of all filters working with that term.

regards,
Pascal

Feature request: multiple rule choice when auto-creating a filter

I've been using quickFilters for a short while now, and it has a potential to be really helpful. I definetly am missing one important feature: allowing multiple rules to be selected for auto-creating a new filter.

I often create filters based on some part of the subject AND sender's e-mail address. Possibility to only choose one, when creating a new filter, is definetly limiting.

Allowing multiple choices on that list would make this add-on much more functional in my opinion.

Feature Request: Filters should be able to run automatically outside Inbox

Dear honorable RealRaven2000,

for years i have used your filter addon and once i am done with being a student and earn some money myself, i will give you a donation for sure. Thank you for your hard work and willingness to respond to the users of your addon. I am not sure if there is a way how to adress the following two problems, maybe there is a solution out there, maybe it can't be done, but the following is what annoys me the most in Thunderbird:

Specs: Windows 10 x64, Thunderbird 68, latest official version of quickFilters.

Description:
Second level filters can only be used manually on specific folders. When having many filters that filter for subject / content, setting them to run automatically interfers with other filters. Apparently there also seems to be something wrong with the order of how filters are applied as they seem to try to run at the same time.

Detailed Description:
Step 1) Receive e-mail into Inbox (Imap-Account, Yahoo.com)
Step 2) (First level) Filter "jobs" filters all e-mails with subject "jobs" automatically from the inbox into the folder "jobs"
Step 3) (Second level) Filter "International Relations jobs" filters all jobs with the content OR subject "International Relations" from the folder "jobs" into Folder "International Relations jobs".

--> Step 3 only works if used manually on the folder "jobs".

Desired Outcome: Step 3 should be able to run automatically and on a specific folder, not only the inbox
Cause?: All filters run automatically on the inbox. When one selects a filter to run on a specific folder, but then closes the filter-menu and opens it up again, the filters are reset to run on the inbox. Furthermore there is no option when creating a filter to run on a different folder other than the inbox.

Greetings,

Thilo

Add keyboard shortcuts for Run Filters buttons

This can be used for archiving and other tasks that are not supposed to run automatically. I propose to implement this as a Pro feature (requiring a quickFilters Pro license) as it is useful and we need to raise funds for the Thunderbird 78 conversion.

Rewrite "Reply-To" custom condition to work without bindings.

Thunderbird 78 removed bindings, completely. This means that the template for reply-To (and the added custom search condition for this) need to be rewritten in JavaScript. Luckily I already invested a number of days to solve this major problem in FiltaQuilla, so I have to transfer this technology to quickFilters in order to assure that filters based on replyTo are still working.

Move to folder - add function to manually create new child folder during filter creation

Original bug from mozdev.org.

Add a new filter action that allows creating a child folder based on mail
header properties (such as sender's name / email address) within a specified
target folder. If the child folder already exists, move the email to it.

It may also be good to persist a new (move email to that folder) filter once
the folder has been created, because the expectation may be automatic filtering
to the new child folder even if the main / generic rule that created the
missing folder in the first place is removed (which may be likely once too many
false positives may have been moved or the inbox is reasonably tidied)

For some related discussion in Thunderbird itself, please refer:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308660

this one is about being able to create a new folder during defining a filter
manually (and selecting in folder picker)

Feature request: Sort Search Terms in a filter

I would like to suggest the creation of a function that allows for the sorting of the terms within a given filter in Thunderbird. For instance, I have a single filter for trash, with multiple definitions within it. This filter has several screens worth of definitions, all in the order of creation, which makes tracking down a definition that I want to change time consuming. A way of sorting the definitions would be a good enhancement, especially if it were possible to sort by domain name.

I include a screenshot of the filter in question. It shows the first panel of definitions. I will page through it 16 times before reaching its end.

Merge filters (at least manually) is broken

After the last step of filter merge from the filter list toolbar - (selecting the target filter an pressing [Merge] - there is no next step:

Nothing happens in the UI after pushing the [Merge] button.

In error console we see the following output:

purchase a quickFilters Pro license is difficult to find

Would rather have made this a pm, but couldn't find any contact info / e-mail.
I have to hold my thunderbird at 68 until filtaquilla is ready for 78+. Thought i would buy a pro licence and that started a pretty long hunt for pricing on your site. First i went to https://quickfilters.quickfolders.org/donate.html and couldn't get the purple "get quickfilters pro for 2011" to open a link (doh isn't a link ). I read rest of page and there is donate only info. Then looked for a button on the premium features page, and found nothing. after a pretty long search i found the link in a black text on the premium features page.
Have looked for it before and given up (ending not donating).

And using filtaquilla not quickfilter, your preferred support of buying a year subscription for quickfilter, seems silly i thought it maybe was a lifetime thing, so I will donate paypall instead. (hate subscription for software)

All the "purchase a quickFilters Pro license." i have clicked ends on the donate page without any "purchase a quickFilters Pro license" links.

Just thought to mention, so you can get donations and get filtaquilla done faster :o)

does not work at all

After I install filtaQuilla in my Windows 10 Thunderbird 68.12.0 (32-bit)
nothing happens except menu item in addons menu. I marked all checkboxes
in options but didn't get any additional menus, controls, or functionality.
And I feel that thunderbird started to behave in a weird way - not downloading messages until restarted.

When automatically removing any own EMail addresses, filter condition list can end up empty

quickFilters has a function for automatically discarding mail addresses in the account from the conditions list if it would lead to:

  • having one's own email in the "from" list (if condition based on from)
  • having one's own email in the "to" list (if condition based on to)
  • duplicate occurrences of an email address (not relevant in this case)

this can lead to an empty conditions list, with no way of adding a new condition manually:
image
quickFilters should at least warn against this or maybe insert a "dummy" condition instead.

When moving mail from Local Inbox, filters are created for original inbox

When a mail account is set up to move all mail to the Local Folders inbox automatically, according to the following advanced account setting:

image

  • in this case, the quickFilters assistant will still generate the filter on the original inbox (where it won't do anything).

Expected behavior:

  • the quickFilters assistant should generate the filter in the "Local Folders" account instead.

Filters have to be created multiple time and the oldest have empty searchTerms

For several months I have notice that I had to regularly recreate some filters.
Now I can no longer right click on Inbox > Run filters since that reports that many of my filters are failing to apply.

Saving the filters I can see that for some filters several entries exist that are empty (see
[email protected]_2020-05-27_17-16.txt)

I have no idea as to why there is such a problem. I reckon that I have a very large amount of filters...

Please let me know how I can best help to fix that issue that seems to be related to https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=26710.

missing condition "Folder name"

Why does the condition "Folder name" not exist in the filter rules. In FiltaQuilla there is this possibility as well.

So it is not possible (except in the "Filter" dialog) to apply rules only to a specific folder.
All rules are always executed. There is no possibility to set rules only for a specific folder.

Avoid Empty Conditions list due to removed recipients - filter cannot be edited

For some reason, the past few times I used quickFilters to create a filter, the condition was unintentionally set to Recipient.
This creates a filter with no conditions and no way to create a condition.
Screenshot from 2020-09-24 12-40-58

  1. There should be a way to add conditions here.
After this window is dismissed, a message (that doesn't appear in a screen capture!) appears saying "quickFilters Email addresses were omitted from the conditions - quickFilt..."
  2. The message comes only after dismissing the useless popup. If it came before the popup, and before it moves the messages to the destination folder, then the action could be remedied. The only way to fix this is to turn off quickFilters, move the message back from the dest folder to the src folder, turn on quickFilters, remember to change the condition, and then things will be fine.
Actually, it would be best if the message were issued before the first quickFilters popup is dismissed, or prevented the popup from being dismissed.

I hope this helps make quickFilters better!
Steve

Remember Copied filters List to insert to other Accounts multiple times

I have 8 different Email accounts. Some filters are unique to a particular account. But most filters I need to be GLOBAL so I can write just one filter and have it apply to all 8 accounts.

Thunderbird has no way to do this -- even with the 'Quick Filters' add-on.

I do see where I can copy & paste a particular filter manually into each account's filter list. But it's very labor intensive because -- unlike all other Windows programs and Windows' default function -- the Quick Filter program does not retain a memory of the copied filter AFTER it is pasted -- so I have to copy it again and again after each paste. Windows' default function in Explorer remembers the copied file(s) and allows for an unlimited number of pastes after the file(s) are copied just once.

Since Thunderbird has no GLOBAL filter ability -- Quick Filters stands as a vitally important program for at least allowing users to 'copy & paste' Thunderbird filters from one account to another. However, it would be infinitely more user-friendly if the Quick Filters program retained the copied file(s) in memory -- so the user does not have to re-copy the same filter after each and every paste.

REQUEST: Please revise the Quick Filters program so it will function like every other windows program -- i.e., so it will retain the copy function in memory -- so the user does not have to re-copy the same filter after each and every paste.

Thank you.

Infinite loop of filtering

Dear honorable RealRaven2000,

Specs: Windows 10 x64, Thunderbird 68, latest official version of quickFilters.

I have not tested if this bug persists without using the quickfilters addon.

Description:
When having many filters that filter for subject / content, setting them to run automatically interfers with other filters. Apparently there seems to be something wrong with the order of how filters are applied as they seem to try to run at the same time.

I am not sure if it has something to do with the #30 second level filter problem, as i created some filters within my yahoo account to get rid of that problem, but now that yahoo closes access to its mail-groups, i have to migrate to some other e-mail service and i would prefer to use Thunderbird and quickfilters to deal with this problem instead of having to create filters at every single mail account i am registered at.

Detailed Description of example:
Step 1) Receive e-mail X into Inbox (Imap-Account, Yahoo.com)
Step 2) Filter 1 and Filter 2 are set to move X from inbox into different folders. Both their requirements for moving are fulfilled. Filter 2 is supposed to run AFTER filter 1, hence if the e-mail has left the inbox, Filter 2 is supposed to stop filtering as there is no e-mail to filter.
Step 3) E-mail is moved to folder 1 AND to folder 2.
Step 4) If i remember correctly for some reason copies of the moved (copied?) e-mails show up in the inbox (?!), then the e-mails get moved to folder 1 and 2 --> more copies --> more moving --> infinite loop
Step 5) I have to close thunderbird because it never stops. It also does not stop when i click on stop filters in the filter menu.

I am afraid to activate all my filters because i am afraid of step 5 xD
Also, shouldn't the problem become worse if i set the filters to "copy" instead of "move" the e-mail? I don't remember if i have tried that one.

Desired Outcome: One filter should start working AFTER another filter is done filtering and there should be no loop creating more e-mail. There should be a stop button to stop all automatic filters at the same time, not just stopping manual filtering. There could be an option in the filter creating menu to start running the filter only if filter(s) xyz have run (and finished).

Cause? Order of filters not working? E-mail copy and/or move function malfunctioning?

Greetings,

Thilo

Feature Request: Add filter to specific email account

I have a bunch of filters set up connected to individual email accounts rather than the "My Email" section of the filters list. It would be great for there to be a way to have new filters be associated with the accounts the email came from rather than as a global filter.

local folders

Emails that go into a unified inbox need filter rules that feed into the "local folders" inbox.
These can be created, quite easily. But not with "create a rule from message". That only creates rules that direct messages into the set of rules ( or the place where they are kept) for that specific email's recipient address.

Make quickFilters compatible with Thunderbird 78 ESR

Thunderbird 78 will reject classic Add-ons. For quickFilters to be supported, it must be rewritten as a "mail extension experiment" which is the preparation for next years full on "Mail extension" conversion where all XUL and XPCOM functions have to be replaced with HTML and native API functions (many of which still need to be implemented in the THunderbird core team).

At this moment it is unclear which special restrictions the conversion to "real" mail extensions is going to bring with it - I am liaising with the Thunderbird development team to get as much functionality supported as possible, for next year.

Running filters automatically on other folders / Sent folder at least

Moved from the mozdev bugzilla Bug 26697 - as reported by Steve K. on 2019-09-03.

The "usual" incoming folder is Inbox, which is why it's important to run filters automatically on incoming messages that go to that folder.

The other "incoming" folder is "Sent", which gets a copy of messages you send.

It would be really useful to have my filters run automatically on messages that go to "Sent" so that those messages will end up in the appropriate folders. This would be a lot more reliable than having me remember to run filters on Sent.

Right now, Sent is just a dog's breakfast of every message that I sent. Filters are a good way to organize that mess and put the messages in an appropriate folder.

Filter creation (merging) window not sized constrained when many test items.

If a filter is merged to an existing filter with multiple "from" addresses (enough to exceed the size of the monitor screen) using the 'Assistant," when the "edit filter" screen pops up it will not be size constrained to the monitor, requiring multiple grabs of the window edge and resizes.

quickFilters Assistant causing TB 78.8.1 crashes

TB 78.8.1 has crashed twice today, a very unusual event as TB is normally completely reliable. In both cases I was using quickFilters Assistant to create a new filter.

See
https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/report/index/9db08639-a858-43d7-abd1-bb9df0210314
and
https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/report/index/e77c5f21-f5eb-4417-9076-e73630210315
for the crash reports.

In the first case I dragged an email to a new folder, got the quickFilters Assistant pop-up, clicked the Create New Filter button and got the filter edit dialog box and then TB crashed before I could click on anything. In the second case TB crashed while the quickFilter Assistant dialog box was still up before I clicked on anything. In both cases I allow the TB crash dialog box to restart TB. Repeating the same operation was successful on the newly restarted TB.

Save attachments to does not save attachments

Environment:
FiltaQuilla 2.0
Thunderbird 68.10.0 64 bit
Ubuntu 20.04

Steps:

  1. Make sure "Save attachments to" is checked under FilterQuilla preferences | Filter actions
  2. Set application rules Manually Run and Getting New Mail (Filter before Junk classification)
  3. Set any matching criteria, so long as they include messages with attachments
  4. Set the following actions to perform:
4a) Save attachments to; select a folder in which the logged user can create and write files
    4b) Mark as read
  5. Receive messages with attachments

Expected Results:

  1. the messages meeting the matching criteria are flagged as read
  2. the attachments of the messages meeting the matching criteria are saved to the designated folder

Actual results:

  1. the messages meeting the matching criteria are flagged as read
  2. No attachments of the messages meeting the matching criteria are saved to the designated folder

copy move menu broken with quickfilters

Hi, I'm using quickfilters 5.0pre56 on Debian/Devuan 10 and I am experiencing an issue:
with quickfilters enabled at least the right click context menu actions
copy
move
move again to ...
are not working at all.
Drag and drop to the same folders work.
Delete is working instead.
Disabling quickfilters in the extensions page restores the correct behaviour.
Tell me if you need more or different infos.

Best regards,
farmatito

P.S.: same happens with thunderbird 78.4.0 on Windows 10

Reduce Clicks User Interface

Would it be possible to set it so that it defaults to the filter instead of having to select it, so that instead of 3+ clicks
Select Drag to Junk
Filter Opens
Select Filter
Click Edit or Cancel (Unsure if Cancel actually cancels remembering the addition of the filter content)
Opens edit, click run,
click close

Should be:
Drag to Junk
Click OK

Check for duplicate attributes when adding conditions to existing filters

The mess I have got myself into before I realized I was duplicating filters:
image

Quickfilters allow duplicate attributes to be added to existing filters. When using Thunderbird with an IMAP account often filters fail to work.

This means you can sometimes accidentally add filters again thinking a filter does not already exist..

If you add the filter again to an existing filter with quickfilters, quick filters allows you, resulting in duplicate attributes in the existing filter.

Also a nice to have would be a tool to find and remove any duplicate attributes that already exist.

Option to Create filter in local folders

Thunderbird allows the option for the message store to be an "inbox for different accounts" which includes a "local folder"option which allows a shared inbox for more than one email account served by that computer's Thunderbird.

Filters can be run from the local folders, and created from TB's "create a filter from message" menu item but currently quickFilters filter creation option from the right click context menu can only create them in user's individual email account folders. (Win 10 64 bit btw)

Exporting filter conditions with "subject" not working correctly

When filter conditions which deal with subject (nsMsgSearchAttrib.attribute=0) are not exported correctly during backup. This will lead to the condition having a "disabled" subject attribute in the editor after importing them:

image

This needs to be fixed when saving (attrib member is missing) and can also be fixed on import by adding the missing attribute value if nsMsgSearchAttrib.value.attrib == 0

New Filter not saved if filter list hidden

If the option "Display Filter List after filter creation" is unchecked and the template "Based on the sender's domain" is chosen, the newly created filter is not saved.

automatically print attachments | Anhänge automatisch ausdrucken wäre sehr hilfreich

Hej RealRaven2000,
I recently read a notice, that you are about to continue this project. I feature that I was really looking for is to print automatically e-mails and their attachment(s). As far as I know there is still no add-on for Thunderbird, only paid add-ons for outlook or stand-alone-software. So this might be a new filter-feature the world is looking for.

Hallo RealRaven2000,
